MORE THAN 20% of company bosses type their own letters, a new survey has found.

And it's all to do with the changing nature of the work of a personal assistant, once referred to as a secretary.

Only brave people these days refer to managers' personal assistants as secretaries.

And in the survey 89% of personal assistants say their role had changed significantly since their work began.

Research on women's website handbag.com found 56% answer the phone and 40% organise their own meetings.

More and more PAs have degrees, the poll for awards body City & Guilds found.

A quarter (27%) of 18-to-24-year-old PAs have the qualification as compared to only 5% of those over 55.

Some 29% make decisions on behalf of the company, 45% manage budgets and 51% have an in-depth knowledge of their organisation.

But some of the work they are asked to do is above and beyond the call of duty, found another survey.

In a survey for Fish4Jobs it was found that a significant number of PAs might be expected to do grocery shopping for their bosses, while others buy and wrap gifts for the boss's partner - and sometimes their lover as well.

PUNE: Two days after a bag-snatching incident on the poorly-lit Dr Coyaji road near the Cantonment police station, the Pune Cantonment Board (PCB) says it has planned steps to address the problem of inadequate street-lighting.

Two women employees of The Times of India, Pune, fell off their two-wheeler and sustained injuries on Wednesday when two youths on a motorcycle snatched one of their handbags. According to the police, the area was not led flexible strips properly lit at the time. PCB members say the incident is a wake-up call and that steps are required to prevent such occurrences.

"Streets in some areas are badly lit, as the street-lights are not maintained properly, said Shailendra Bidkar, an elected member of the PCB. "The issue of street-light maintenance will be taken up at the general body meeting. We will talk to experts and initiate measures."

As a short-term measure, Bidkar stated that work pertaining to street-lights would be included in repair work for the monsoon.

"Other work in preparation for the rains, like road repair and drainage cleaning, is currently on in the Cantonment. We will see that maintenance and repair of street-lights is also undertaken to resolve the problem, at least in areas where it is extremely severe."

As per the board's data, there are around 3,800 street-lights in the Cantonment. "Some streets have poor
embroidered patches lighting as the cables supplying power to the street lights need to be repaired," said PCB member Karan Makwani. "Repairs are currently on and the problems pertaining to inadequate street-lighting should be solved once the work is over."

He said that officials and contractors had been told to take precautions to avoid damaging cables while undertaking other work.

When contacted, the board's chief executive officer D K Malik promised to look into the matter, adding that he could not offer details on the issue as he had been out of town.

He also pointed out that various committees in the PCB dealt with issues related to infrastructure and the help of these committees would be sought.

"But the truth is that when Sheila McWade - my on-screen wife Kay McCoy - took a break from Fair City the writers decided an affair would be the easiest way for her to go.

"It wasn't my idea!"

Gerard has been playing Malachy Costello in the hit soap for almost 11 years. And since coming to Carrigstown he has made the transition from priest, to married man, to adulterer.

At the minute Malachy is battling to run the homeless shelter in his role as a social worker and look after McCoys pub in Kay's absence. Gerard said his hectic work schedule and practising for Celebrity Jigs 'N' Reels is helping him act.

He added: "Malachy is supposed to be really stressed at the minute because he's doing two jobs and can't get in touch with Kay.

"And there's not much acting in it because I'm run ragged working on Fair City and practising my dance routines."

Malachy is well-known for his caring nature and Gerard said people will often come up to him in the street to talk about their problems. He added: "What people like about Malachy is that he's a good listener. In the beginning I was regularly asked to hear people's confessions.

"People still come up to me and tell me very intimate problems.

"But that is the nature of the character I play.

People see me as an agony uncle and it is always very interesting to me that people are so involved with the soap.

"Unfortunately I have to tell them that I am not a trained counsellor and there's nothing really I can do for them - but it happens a lot."

Gerard claimed he has been working flat out to impress judges Colin Dunne, Jean Butler and George Hook Dimmable LED Down Light K1018 2x3x1W / 2x3x3W on this Sunday's show.

He said: "I have taken their criticism on board - Colin said I was too tense and Jean said I was shuffling so I have been working damn hard to try to be better than my first week.

"Paula has a wonderful, bubbly, outgoing personality and we've stayed in touch.

"So it did help that we were friends as we didn't have to go through the process of getting to know each other before we started practising.
