TEIGNMOUTH Ladies and Dawlish Men's hockey clubs are in talks about a planned merger as the face of the sport in South Devon prepares for a major change.

If Teignmouth and Dawlish do form a new club, they will join a proposed mixed Torbay Hockey Club next season.

Torbay Men and Torbay Ladies, currently separate organisations, have already announced plans to create a bigger six-team Torbay HC for the 2010-2011 campaign.

Torbay Ladies recently changed their name from Paignton Ladies in preparation for their merger with the men.

But the Teignmouth-Dawlish negotiations are a new development.

The name of the new club and its colours are important decisions still under discussion.

Teignmouth, who run 1st and 2nd XIs in the West Women's League and a youth team, play in black-and-red.

Dawlish, who field two teams in the N4 West & South Wales League, play in green-and-white.

But Dawlish president Roger Gallagher said: "We can't see any negatives in a merger.

"We've got a time schedule in place, and we are looking forward to forging ahead and securing the futures of both ourselves and the ladies.

"We've got a young batch of players coming through at Dawlish, and they started to play a bit of mixed hockey with the ladies in the summer, so it would be nice if we were part of one club.

"We also want to create a better set-up to train and coach our youngsters, so more of them stay with us, rather than think about moving somewhere else."

Teignmouth chairperson Michelle Judge, whose club rose to Premier level for the first time this season, added: "These are exciting times.

"We have just got Club First status from England Hockey, which goes towards securing ClubMark accreditation.

"That will help when it comes to trying to get funding in the future.

"We don't anticipate any problems with a new club being accepted by our two leagues, because the teams will carry on as before.

"But we are now looking for a new name, new colours and, hopefully, sponsorship for the new club."

One major benefit of a new club should come in efforts to find and fund a new all-weather pitch.

Teignmouth and Dawlish both play at the Dawlish Leisure Centre pitch in Sandy Lane.

But that's around 15 years old and showing its age.

Teignmouth are already putting together an application for financial support from England Hockey, ahead of possible talks with Teignbridge Council over the laying of a new pitch.

There is also a one-team Dawlish Ladies club, but they are not involved in the current talks.

The retired engineer and his dog ran for home when Mr White says they saw a white "shimmering" shape walking towards them in Phear Park, Exmouth.

He said: "The object was about 30ft in diameter and 100ft long, with blue and red flashing lights on its perimeter. It appeared to land at the top end of the park by the bowling green.

"My dog started to growl when what I can only describe as a white shape came towards us.

"It was about 4ft high and seemed to be translucent. It moved very slowly towards us. I was transfixed because it made a droning noise which sounded like 'my my' over and over again, which I could not understand.

"I didn't know where the sound was coming from but it was coming straight towards me.

"I immediately ran back through the park."

Mr Shaw said the UFO appeared to hover over the bowling green hedge, then flew horizontally, from left to right, before flying off at high speed at a 45-degree angle.

Mr Shaw said his normally placid border collie dog, Sydney, ran away from the object after baring his teeth at the approaching figure.
