QUESTION Did Pope Pius II have a sideline in naughty books? POPE PIUS II -- born Aeneas Sylvius Piccolomini, in Corsignano, Republic of Siena, in 1405 -- overcame humble origins by his wit and charm to become influential in court and wholesale sexy lingerie ecclesiastical circles.

He seemed a man most unfitted for the priesthood, taking the mantle of an amorous poet and bon vivant. He is known to have fathered at least two, but probably more, illegitimate children. In 1442, he attracted the attention of Frederick III of Austria, who made him Poet Laureate. Piccolomini was a prolific poet, most of his output being pretty sensuous stuff, 'as one under the vernal impulse of early manhood'.

Later critics described him as a deft imitator rather than a true poet, rehashing the amatory poems of Horace, Ovid and Petrarch.

In 1443, he fathered another child, with an Englishwoman called Elizabeth.

In 1444, he published The Tale Of Two Lovers, the raciest of his works. The novel, set in Siena, follows the love story of Lucretia, a married woman, and Euryalus, one of the men waiting on the Duke of Austria -- and is crammed with erotic imagery, such as: 'She was deep-bosomed and her breasts swelled out on either side like two pomegranates, so that one longed to touch them.' In 1445, Piccolomini suffered a severe illness which put an end to his dissolute life and erotic output.

MOSELEY stalwart Adam Caves has warned his team-mates they are playing for the future of the famous old club.

The Billesley Boys kicked off their relegation play off campaign at Bees yesterday in what was the first of six crucial showdowns.

Ian Smith's men face a return match with Bees and home and away clashes with near-neighbours Coventry and strugglers Rotherham, in a four way battle to avoid the drop.

Whichever side finishes bottom of the group will be forced out of the professional ranks and into the community game.

It will also lose pounds 300,000 of guaranteed funding - in Moseley's case more than half its playing budget.

And at a time when they are trying to raise money to begin building their new 5,000 seater stand, Moseley perhaps have more to lose from relegation than anyone else.

It is a threat of which Caves, is all too aware: "I think it's fair to say we are playing for the future," he said.

"We have done well to achieve what we have and you could say we are unlucky to be in the situation we are in.

"But we are in it, we are going to have to deal with it. There are people playing for positions and jobs at the end of the day.

Kitty Lindsay's bag of tricks includes writing, acting, stand-up comedy, dance and improv. She's using it all on the New York theater scene, with great success.

On a recent visit to Charleston to see her parents, Richard and Pamela Tabor Lindsay, she paused for a quick photo shoot. It's probably the only time she's sat still in months.

Lindsay, 28, recently finished an off-Broadway production of her original play, "The Pipe Cleaner." She's been onstage with her bawdy "White Cotton Panties" all-female sketch comedy group, and they are in preproduction for their second viral video, which she wrote.

Currently she's the assistant director of a production of "The Vagina Monologues" in New York City and benefiting The Urban Woman's New Beginnings and Safe Haven. She's writing a new play, and is in talks with a New York filmmaker to make "The Pipe Cleaner" into a film.

The performer got her start with the Charleston Ballet and the Charleston Light Opera Guild, following her school days in Massachusetts and England.

"I was very fortunate in that I was given the opportunity to attend a performing-arts boarding school called Walnut Hill School in Natick, Massachusetts. If you've ever seen the film 'Fame,' it is very similar," Lindsay said.

"We had academic classes in the morning and in the afternoon and early evening, we had our art classes. I was a replica hublot watches ballet major - before attending Walnut Hill, I received all of my ballet training from Kim Pauley and the Charleston Ballet - but I also kept up with my writing by taking some classes in the creative-writing department."

After graduation in 1999, Lindsay moved to London to pursue dancing further and pick up some formal acting training. She spent two years living abroad and during that time studied at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art. Upon her return to the States, she moved to New York and studied creative writing at New York University while continuing to pursue acting in theater, television and film.

Lindsay performed in "Footloose" and "Chicago" with the Charleston Light Opera Guild in 2002.

"Both were incredible learning experiences for me. Before that time, I had always kept my dancing and acting separate. There is nothing like combining all the elements of theater," she said.

"Acting, dancing and singing simultaneously, and doing all three things well, is very difficult and requires all of a performer's energy, concentration and will. I had a blast, and my respect for the art of musical theater grew exponentially because of the experience."

Lindsay praised the Charleston Light Opera Guild.

"Everyone is so professional. No one misses a rehearsal, no one throws tantrums, everyone shows up on time and is prepared and ready to work - you would be surprised at how rare this sort of work ethic can be," she said.

"The people of the Guild truly love what they do and it shows in their productions. There's always a sense of teamwork, a sense of 'We're in this together' because the process from start to finish is revered, savored and not taken for granted. In New York City, this sort of devotion can be overwhelmed by this insatiable desire to become a celebrity, to be a star, to be famous," Lindsay said.
