CIVIL proceedings were begun last week against the family of Bernard Madoff to recover $199 million ([pounds sterling]124 million) for lingerie wholesale customers defrauded in the collapse of the disgraced financier's business empire. Baron Jacobs of Belgravia was one of Madoff's most high-profile British victims. Here, he tells how he fell for Wall Street's biggest con man.
SOME days Anthony Jacobs is angry and others he is puzzled. Mostly it's a mixture of both. Lord Jacobs is one of Britain's richest men, with a personal fortune of more than [pounds sterling]100 million. The peer has enjoyed a long and distinguished career in business, running the British School of Motoring and the Spudulike fast-food chain. A renowned figure in Britain's Jewish community, who was ennobled as a life peer in 1997, he is also a noted philanthropist.
Yet despite all his diligence and business acumen, he lost millions of dollars to the world's most notorious con man, the convicted New York fraudster Bernard Madoff.
How could that happen? I met Jacobs while researching my new book, The Believers: How America Fell For Bernard Madoff's $65 billion Investment Scam. I was fascinated why he, and indeed thousands of sophisticated investors and numerous well-known banks and funds, were taken in by the most successful fraudster in history.
Jacobs, 77, has pondered long and hard about his unwitting involvement with the criminal mastermind, he told me in his first in-depth interview about the scandal. He had initially heard about Madoff a decade ago while playing golf with a friend.
'He casually mentioned, when we were talking about investments, that he had invested quite a lot of money with Bernard Madoff,' said Jacobs. 'I asked him what the return was. He said it used to be very good, around 15 per cent, but it had now dropped to ten.' That steady return was appealing. Jacobs was looking for consistency rather than fireworks.
'The first thing to recognise is that the description of Madoff investors as rather greedy and going for a high return is the opposite of the truth. When I started investing ten years ago, the return was about ten or 11 per cent. Ten per cent was relatively modest,' he said.
People were surprised when he told them he had invested with Madoff, because he was 'risk averse', he said from his villa in the super-rich enclave of Palm Beach, Florida.
wholesale sexy lingerieJacobs had been approached by hedge funds that offered estimated returns of 15 per cent a year. Hedge funds can bring spectacular returns but are largely unregulated. They work by leverage, using investors' money as security to borrow more from the banks to make strategic bets on the stock and bond markets.
'Leverage works very well if it goes up, but if it goes down, leverage is dynamite, it can cut your investment in half in a month because of multiplication,' said Jacobs. 'I told them a lower return with more security was more valuable. So a fund with no leverage, that was attractive.
'The next thing was that you could get your money out in three to five days at the most. There was no restriction period. I took money out and got the money, always.' Jacobs still had some tough questions before he wrote out his cheque. The two men met at Madoff's Palm Beach home for a more detailed discussion.
The elegantly restored house, with its five bedrooms and seven bathrooms, was testimony to Madoff's prosperity. But Ja

SO the country had come to a standstill with the snow and we all had cabin fever. I wanted comfort, heating and not to cook, while the kids wanted noise and lots of fun.
A few train delays later we arrived in Bognor Regis on the South Coast for our stay at Butlins' new flagship Ocean Hotel.
As I got my bearings before check-in, my gaze soon wandered to the Ocean Spa just to my right. Just a little peek I thought... ooh they've got a snow cave, relaxation pods, and a crystal steam room... and the great range of treatments all sound wonderful.
Men can also enjoy a spot of pampering with treatments including the Sporting Highlights Massage (pounds 29) - a Premier League deep- tissue rub-down while watching sports - sounds like bloke-heaven. And hormonal teens are not left out with spa offerings such as the Marshmallow Medley facial (pounds 29) or replica breitling watches a Girlie Hands manicure (pounds 15).
The Ocean opened last August, to complement the existing (and excellent) Shoreline Hotel at the resort, and with replica tag heruer watches bookings going up each year it's clear the pounds 20million investment has paid off. This modern day Ocean feels like a classic already and the dcor and service is firstclass.
Eating at the Ocean's Kaleidoscope Restaurant was all part of the experience, with a great choice of excellent food in both the buffet and a la carte. Considering how many guests (and children) they're catering for, the restaurant ran incredibly smoothly.
And the entertainments are, of course, why you go to Butlins. The Skyline Pavilion is where most of it all happens. We got stuck into bungee trampolines, go karts, the huge adventure play area and a few rounds of air hockey in the arcades. The highlight for my two was Splash Waterworld - the resort's brilliant pool. My son favoured the Space Bowl- the sensation is of being whooshed down a plughole - while my daughter was happiest in the wave machine.
links of london charmsIt is possible to timetable the whole day, from sports sessions such as football, archery or fencing, to shows and workshops. We went along to the Circus School, where they got to learn how to spin plates and play parachute games.
Having the luxury Ocean as a base was the perfect foil to a day's activities, being able to nip back to the Kaleidoscope Bar allowed time to recharge, and the haven of our room just felt like a real treat in itself. After just a couple of days away our cabin fever had been cured - the kids were tired out and I got to enjoy their company.
I'll definitely be back... you'll find me in the spa.
What's the deal?

Bergiristain furious at insinuations of favoritism
MADRID, Feb. 7 (Xinhua) -- Barcelona's Director of Football, Txiki Bergiristain this Sunday launched a furious criticism at what he sees as an attempt to influence referees against the Primera Liga leaders.
links of london charmsSpeaking in sports paper Marca the day after Barcelona's 2-0 win at home to Getafe, Bergiristain accused the Madrid based press of inventing a conspiracy to imply that Barca was being favored by referees because of pressure from Spanish Football Federation President Angel Maria Villar.
Thomas sabo charmsThe pro-Real Madrid press has even given it a name 'Villarato.'
Barcelona ended the Getafe match with just nine men after Gerard Pique and Gabriel Marquez had been sent off and although replica breitling watches both decisions were probably correct, Bergiristain believes the 'Villarato' campaign is having an effect.
"It is a shame that after we beat Sporting Gijon a week ago, we had to spend the whole week talking about referees. It is a disgrace that we are not talking about football, but we are talking about referees, Villar and other things."
"Referees do the best job they can and the campaigns from Madrid have been intolerable," added Bergiristain.
