A WONDER vaccine for prostate cancer has been created by Irish scientists but it will be years before it can be used, researchers said yesterday.

The breakthrough by scientists at University College Cork offers real hope in the battle against one of the biggest killer diseases in this country.

The vaccine enables a person's immune system to attack cancer cells directly and researchers are now in discussions with clinicians to bring the vaccine to human trials.

However, the project is halfway through a process that is estimated to take up to 15 years.

About 1,900 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer in Ireland each year. It is the second most common form of cancer diagnosed in men and up to 900 sufferers die of the disease each year.

Incidence and death rates for prostate cancer are higher in Ireland than in the UK.

The Cork Cancer Research Centre at UCC has been working on approaches that try to replica tag heruer watches stimulate the ability of the immune system to recognise and destroy cancer cells via selective killing mechanisms. Dr Mark Tangney, who is principal investigator on the research, said: "We have also shown that immune activation with DNA vaccines is safe.

The vaccine is meant to complement existing treatments which involve surgical removal of a tumour and radiotherapy.

Dr Tangney said that after treatment, and usually surgery, the new vaccines work by seeking out and destroying secondary cancer cells that may have spread to other parts of the body.

And he added that it could be possible to create vaccines for other forms of cancer in the future.

Using DNA in vaccines enables the immune system to get a fix on the cancer cells while leaving healthy cells alone.

The research was published yesterday in the international journal Genetic Vaccines and Therapy.

CRESTWOOD, Ill. - Cancer rates are higher than average in a south Chicago suburb where replica breitling watches officials are accused of knowingly drawing drinking water from a tainted well and concealing the practice for decades, according to a new state report released on Friday.

Jessica Canady won two Colonial Athletic Association championship regular-season titles over the weekend.

Most women's basketball fans know about the one Canady and her Old Dominion teammates locked up Sunday with a victory at Virginia Commonwealth . The other may come as a surprise.

This semester, Canady is moonlighting as an intern with the men's basketball team while she finishes requirements toward a sports management degree. She has a plethora of duties, including managing the squad's academic studies checklist, directing film exchange with opponents and preparing mailings to recruits.

"She even answers the phone if she hears it ringing," men's assistant coach John Richardson said. "If she wants to claim a part of our men's regular-season championship, I'm good with that because she's the type that rolls up her sleeves and gets it done."

That could be said for her career as a player too.

The 6-foot forward, who will be honored as an outgoing senior before tonight's final home game against Towson, has never been one to hang her hat on statistics. After ODU clinched Sunday with a 76- 65 victory at VCU, Canady glanced at a stat sheet, saw her line, and said, "Seven points. That's nice."

In actuality, there were seven big points because they pushed her past 1,000 for her career, something that looked out of reach three months ago.

Bothered severely as she recovered from two offseason knee surgeries, Canady struggled through ODU's non-conference slate and sat out five consecutive games at one point.

When she came back, her scoring didn't match what she'd done as a junior, when she averaged 12.6 points a game. But her value did.

"I'd have loved to have had a healthy Jess this season," coach Wendy Larry said. "But what she's done this season is special. I cringe watching her basically drag that leg of hers down the court and get it done on one good knee. She can't jump. Her movement is limited. But she's a warrior and she's always been a smart player and a great passer."

That's been enough. Since the Lady Monarchs started conference play, Canady has averaged 11.4 points and 7.2 rebounds. A preseason first-team All-CAA selection heading into her senior year, Canady will likely be left off the first team when honors are announced next week. Her numbers don't stack up , particularly in a year when the CAA has three of the nation's top 10 scorers: Delaware's Elena Delle Donne, James Madison's Dawn Evans and Drexel's Gabriela Marginean.

But tonight, Canady will receive a 1,000-point club ball along with her senior plaque. She's the 27th ODU woman to hit that plateau.

"A lot of good players don't get there, so I'm very happy about it," said Canady, who scored 2,204 points and grabbed 1,280 rebounds at Jamestown High. "When you bring it to the table, it's a great accomplishment."

If a chance to play professionally overseas doesn't pan out - Canady plans to send game tapes to teams after the season - the next move may be into coaching.

Larry has signed Canady up for "So you want to be a coach" - a clinic put on by the Women's Basketball Coaches Association each year at the Final Four.
