According to a report by the ministry, the country, which has been seeking an economic integration of the Northeast Asian region by creating favorable conditions for FTAs, will kick off a joint study with the countries, in which government officials, scholars and business representatives will participate.

Along with the trilateral FTA, the country will also continue to push for settling separate bilateral trade agreements with China and Japan, the ministry said in the report.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Jan. 18 (Xinhua) -- Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi extended solicitude to all Chinese personnel in Haiti on disaster relief and peacekeeping missions in a phone conversation on Monday.

The artifacts were found buried in a long-abandoned privy catalog printing behind the house at 26 West St. The construction crew alerted city officials as soon as the brick outline of the privy became visible Wednesday.

Thomas W. Bodor - a consulting archaeologist retained by the Historic Preservation Commission to oversee such discoveries at construction sites - said yesterday that the privy appears to have been dug around the same time the house was built, about 1760. It is next to another abandoned privy, that was dug about 1860.

"We can tell the people who lived here had a nice collection of pottery off of which they were eating," Bodor said of the earlier privy site.

Holding up a square bottle that was in nearly perfect condition, and believed to have once contained medicine or liquor, Bodor said the discovery was an unusual for its "degree of preservation."

The family that threw these relics into the privy, which served as a dump for all types of refuse, must have been fairly prosperous, since there was a lot of quality china and glazed pieces of tableware, Bodor said.

The construction crew, which is redesigning and upgrading the roughly 1-acre surface parking lot that connects Gott's Court Garage and the city's visitors center, discovered the brick-lined privy late Wednesday.

"I'm the one who called; I have enough knowledge to know to stop and call," said Century Engineering Co. construction Supervisor Henryk E. Oswiecimka. "The privy was very defined by the brick wall."

"I have been doing construction since 1970, plus, we are working in Annapolis," Oswiecimka said, laughing at how abundant artifacts are in Annapolis.

The original privy pit was about 41/4 feet deep, and has been covered with about 2 feet of fill dirt for generations.

Scientists from the Frederick-based commercial archaeological firm of R. Christopher Goodwin & Associates are conducting the dig, and will excavate both privies, Bodor said.

This discovery is part of the Historic Preservation and Planning Commission process, and is not related to Archaeology in Annapolis, the long-standing University of Maryland program that trains archaeology students.

That program, in the past two years, has uncovered beneath the existing Fleet Street a log road that is older than the city. Students in that program also found, on the same street, what appears to be the oldest African religious artifact ever discovered in the United States.

XI'AN, Feb. 20 (Xinhua) -- Bricks dating back 5,000 to 7,000 years have been unearthed in northwest China's Shaanxi Province, adding between 1,000 to 2,000 years onto Chinese brick-making history, archaeologists claimed Saturday.

"The five calcined bricks were unearthed from a site of the Yangshao Culture Period dating 5,000 to 7,000 years ago. Previously, the oldest known bricks in the country were more than 4,000 years old," Shaanxi Provincial Institute of Archaeology researcher Yang Yachang said.

The bricks, including three red ones and two gray ones, all uncompleted, Yang said. The site under excavation is located at Liaoyuan Village of Baqiao District, and Huaxu Town, Lantian County of Xi'an, capital of Shaanxi Province.

Yangshao Culture is a Neolithic culture that flourished along the Yellow River, which runs across China from west to east. The culture was named after Yangshao, the name of the first village discovered of the culture, in 1921 in central China's Henan Province.

Archaeologists used to believe the ceramics were applied to architecture in the Shang Dynasty (1600 B.C-1100 B.C.), which had been proved wrong by the new discovery, Yang said.

The smooth surface and rough surface of most well preserved red bricks are vertical to each other, and the rough surface was designed to be stuck to other materials, Yang said.

The site, called Lantian New Street Site and covering an area of more than 200,000 square meters, was to be cut through by a new highway, said Shao Jing, assistant researcher of the institute.

More than 150 sites, including houses, ash pits, ash grooves and kilns, had been found in the area, Shao said.

"The bricks were all discovered in ash pits, which were garbage containers for the ancient people. For the modern archaeologist, these garbage containers are treasure troves of artifacts," she said.

The world's oldest unearthed bricks date back 8,000 to 10,000 years. They were discovered in Middle East and they were adobes which had not been calcined. Thus, the brick-making history of human kind should be about 10,000 years, Yang Yachang said.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of a three-day joint African- Arab ministerial meeting on agriculture and food security, which concluded Tuesday.
